Autorail - Baume et Marpent #AR 133

14 august 2010 - Pont d'Erezée, Belgia. Spalinowy tramwaj turystyczny wyrusza w swoją 8-kilometrową podróż do Forge-à-la-Plez.

6 june 2009 - Forge a la Plez (BE) – the TTA tram crossing a minor road. In the old days, it just ran though at full speed, but now, of course, the Health and Safety Taleban insist that it must first come to a halt and then be signalled across the road at walking pace by a man with a baton. Is this progress?

6 june 2009 - Blier (BE) – down in the forest, something stirs……. For some years after the end of passenger services, trams were still used to haul timber trains on several of these Ardennes lines – this is how the TTA line survived until the preservation society took it over.

6 june 2009 - Blier (BE) – A TTA tram and trailers running into the passing loop at Blier. Trams are regularly operated along the original SNCV line from Pont d’Erezee as far as Forge a la Plez, where several more kilometres of track wait to be restored.

6 june 2009 - Erezee (BE) – Pont d’Erezee. On the Tramway Touristique de l’Aisne deep in the Ardennes hills - a typical Vicinal country tramway, now run by a preservation group. Diesel autorail AR133 dates from 1935 but the trailer cars are older and were once steam-hauled.

6 june 2009 - Erezee (BE) – Amonines. A typical Vicinal scene that could be seen all over Belgium until the 1950s. Originally, these lines were steam-worked, of course.

Autorail - Baume et Marpent #AR 133

6 june 2009 - Erezee (BE) – Amonines. The TTA train crossing a minor road on the way to Erezee. Once a passenger line, this track survived for the transport of timber from the nearby Ardennes forests and was saved by enthusiasts. One day, they hope to extend the current operation – the tracks are still in place, but unsafe for regular use.

6 june 2009 - Erezee (BE) - Amonines. I showed a few pictures of the TTA museum line before – this is an original Vicinal tramway running 8km through very nice scenery in the Ardennes. All the vehicles are authentic SNCV diesel trams and trailers that once ran on similar lines throughout Belgium – there is also an SNCV steam tram locomotive for special occasions.

Autorail - Baume et Marpent #AR 133

18 august 1999 - Blier, Belgium/Belgie. One of the diesel trams operated by the TTA museum group in the Ardennes forest. This line was formerly a part of the huge Vicinal network.

Autorail - Baume et Marpent #AR 133

18 august 1999 - Dochamps, Belgium/Belgie. Here, AR 133 has travelled to the farthest extent of the TTA line and waits to return to the northern terminus at Pont d’Erezee. Normal passenger trips don’t usually come this far as the track is in very poor condition. Autorails like this operated most SNCV/NMBS rural services, often pulling passenger trailers and/or goods wagons. Road improvements eventually killed off the tramways. Note the posting box for letters, which would be emptied in the next town.

Autorail - Baume et Marpent #AR 133

18 august 1999 - Blier, Belgium/Belgie. A debut on TWB for this operator, and also (possibly) the first diesel tram? Nearly 5000km of metre-gauge ‘Vicinal’ tramways once covered Belgium, electrified in some towns, but in rural areas operated by diesel (formerly steam) trams. This delightful Vicinal line closed in 1959 but was taken over by TTA in 1964 as an enthusiast/tourist operation, but money for improvements is very tight. The line runs through beautiful countryside, but suffers from being in a very remote area and is hard to reach - just one bus goes there every Tuesday morning (but doesn’t come back).
