19 january 2014 - Bruern Road, Fifield. The Cotswolds are very picturesque, with gently rolling hills and scatterings of properties built with the easy-on-the-eye Cotswold Stone. This service extends beyond Milton-under-Wychwood on Sundays only, which sends it deeper in to the Cotswolds.

Stagecoach reserve the `Gold` brand for longer routes that generate high revenues and where a high-quality brand will attract passengers. The county of Oxfordshire is a very affluent area, and thus the brand works well and 5 routes in Oxford operate with these vehicles. Most are detail-branded for specific routes, but in order to provide cover for any route should one vehicle be unavailable for use there are 3 that carry generic `Oxford` branding, such as this example.

17 january 2014 - Oxford Road, Kidlington. The city of Oxford is now subject to a new `Low Emissions Zone`, which means all buses operating regular services in the city must be of Euro 5 emissions standards, or higher. This operator awaits a large batch of new gyro-hybrid double deck buses from Wright. Until then, buses have been lent from fellow Go-Ahead companies on the south coast. You can see that the advertising space has been used to promote this as a City of Oxford bus to help prevent confusion among passengers who are more familiar with their red livery.

Seen here passing the unusually swollen River Windrush after heavy rains this week is a long-standing member of the Stagecoach Oxfordshire fleet, having operated in the county from new. 17 october 2013 - Eynsham, Swinford Toll Bridge. This route is regularly driven by myself, and is served by 17 identical vehicles which pass over this very old, picturesque bridge up to once every 10 minutes. The bridge is narrow and frequently congested in peak hours, though the tolls are cheap: a whole 5 pence for cars!

One such service that was involved in this change was the rural X9 service that I have now enjoyed driving while employed by both of the aforementioned operators.

8 october 2013 - Botley Road, Oxford. Dedicated to the large Park & Ride network in the city is this hybrid bus. Oxford is rapidly becoming the "home" of hybrid buses in the UK, with both major operators in the city using large quantities of ADL and Volvo products. Also, due for delivery to City of Oxford next year are a batch of hybrids utilising a gyro hybrid system devleoped locally by the Williams F1 racing company! For now though, this existing example is seen passing under the low Botley Road bridge whilst a First Great Western train passes overhead.

15 march 2010 - Oxford, Queen Street. On one hand the council in Oxford is very progressive when it comes to public transport. They built large P&R places, they made the operators reduce the number of buses in the city centre due to congestion, and they pedestrianised this bus-only street in the centre. On the other hand, they do not think about electric public transport at all - attaching the wires to the historic buildings or constructing poles in the narrow streets in the centre. And sadly - as the photo shows - when you have pedestrianised areas with buses the pedestrians always prefer to get into the shot rather than walk on the 'roadway'.

15 june 2008 - London Borough of Hillingdon, Western Avenue. An Oxford Tube double-decker has just entered London, having crossed the Green Belt. Sometimes you just can't help liking free competition on the road. Stagecoach invested quite heavily in their coach fleet (the lower deck is even low-floor and wheelchair accessible!), which runs every 10-15 minutes between Oxford and London, even offering free WiFi internet. The journey time is around 100 minutes, the fare is £12 standard, £9 for students. In contrast, the railways have around 2 tph, journey time is an hour and a bit, but a standard fare is a whopping £22.50. Thus, Oxford Tube has successfully swept through the student market and has become so popular, that the Oxford Bus Company decided to run its own service, the Oxford Espress - same frequency, same fares, and free WiFi as well. The only people pissed off by these developments are probably the Londoners, which have to suffer extra half-empty coaches 'littering' the way between Victoria and the A40.
