26 july 2011 - Krajowa, Calea București To się nazywa skład! Dwie katówki sczepione tyłkami obsługują linię 100. Powodem nietypowego zestawienia jest remont ulicy w centrum miasta, który zaowocował podzieleniem sieci na dwie części. Jednakże w centrum nie ma pętli na której mogłyby zawrócić więc zmiana kierunku odbywała się przez tymczasowo ułożoną zwrotnicę. Wschodnią część obsługiwał jeden taki skład oraz kilka składów Tatr T4 z Drezna natomiast zachodnią 2 wiedeńczyki.

The end of one of the large fleet of TIMIS cars that worked in Craiova until a few years ago – this one managed to hang on a little longer as a snowplough. Although it was modernised at the local Electroputere factory in 1994, it now has an appointment with the cutter’s torch. The remains of other TIMIS cars are piled up on the left.

1 october 2008 - Craiova (RO) – depou/zajezdnia. This is the very strange chassis of a Rathgeber three-axle tram. Note how the middle axle is free to steer left and right on curves. I think that, like some British trams of the 1920s, this arrangement isn’t very reliable and, unless maintenance is very good, the centre axle tends to lock in one position. The tram then becomes a very long, rigid six-wheeler and either come off the track or damages the rails. Romanian maintenance probably isn’t too wonderful, but at least they are trying……helped by a 2.5 litre bottle of beer, which is obviously essential!

1 october 2008 - Craiova (RO) – depou/zajezdnia. An ex-Muenchen three-axle Rathgeber car outside the tramway workshops. This is actually car #664 with an identity crisis. Look closely and you’ll see that it is standing on temporary wheels – the reason for this is explained in my next photo.

1 october 2008 - Craiova (RO) – depou/zajezdnia. These T4 trailers were never too common outside Dresden but a large batch has found its way to Craiova. This one arrived in late 2007 and was still untouched a year later, so perhaps won’t be used here.

1 october 2008 - Craiova (RO) – CLF TERMO. Another tramway line built on the orders of the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in the late 1980s. Typically, it runs along the main highway to industrial plants on the edge of the city and is mostly laid in the centre of the road. Trams are a mixture of second-hand vehicles – this ex-Vienna (and Rotterdam) SGP E1 is at the power station at the far west end of the line – only a few trams each day come to this desolate place. There are rumours that system may be replaced by buses when the city has enough money.
