Duewag GT6 #878

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Abo El Dardaa street. On a quiet Friday morning (it's a holiday in Islam after all) an ex-Copenhagen Duewag runs into the centre to find a group of European tourists at the terminus, who are clicking pictures wildly like the Japanese on speed :) Since one of these tourists happened to be the head of the Danish Tram Museum in Skjoldenaesholm (a local celebrity), once we entered the vehicle we were treated to a quick lesson in driving for the second time in Egypt. The lesson would have been more interesting though, had it not been for the nervous driver, who did not let us go beyond the series notches...

Duewag GT6 #884

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Masr. Another chaotic scene in the markets near the railway station. Every square metre is covered with goods for sale (even between the tram tracks). The man with the jug is selling drinks of water through the tram windows as they pass - pure River Nile water, no doubt - lovely! The other goon in front became a real problem here, standing in all our photos - he almost got his face re-arranged by an English fist.

Duewag GT6 #878

19 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Shari Abi ed Darda. A quiet moment in Alexandria (Friday morning, which is a holy day). It is very rare to find a city tram not surrounded by traffic. This was a good chance for us all to test our tram driving skills, complete with Egyptian passengers. The conductor wears the standard Alexandria Tramways uniform!

Kinki Sharyo Alexandria #121

21 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Midan el Tahrir. 121+122. A non-pantograph set at the war memorial in central Alexandria. Trams also ran from here inland, but this short link was closed a few years ago, as traffic conditions made progress along the street almost impossible. In the background, a Chinese double-deck bus runs along the sea front.

Kinki Sharyo Alexandria #126

21 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Shari Qasr Ras. 126+127. One of the non-pantograph equipped Kinki Sharyo tram sets runs alongside the Mediterranean Sea en route to Ras el Tin.

Miscellaneous 4-axle tram

19 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Mustafa Kamel. Someone forgot to tell the builders of this amazing 'fantasy' tram when to stop. Look closely, and you will see that the middle part is an old 4-wheel tram body, which has been mounted on a long bogie trailer underframe (possibly from one of the original Ramleh line double-deckers). Then more and more parts have been added....... I just love the verandah upstairs. I'd like to charter this tram and ride along up here whilst English tea and cucumber sandwiches are served by a white-coated waiter, as 1920s jazz music is played on an old gramophone.

Kinki Sharyo Alexandria #1110

19 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Chatby. One of the batch of Kinki Sharyo tram sets modified to run direct from the city along the Ramleh interurban - two trolley poles and two pantographs. The trolley pole will be raised at Place Zaghloul tram station for the run into the city streets.

Ganz / Düwag #1213

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Egyptian tram interiors (4) - the conductor's desk on a Ganz car. This is rarely used - except to prepare the conductor's lunch...... In Egypt, one car of a two or three car tram set is always reserved for women.

19 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Egyptian tram interiors (3). Upstairs on a Ramleh line double decker.

Kinki Sharyo #115

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG)- Midan Zaghloul. The impressive Ramleh lines tram station, with three interurban trains ready to depart along the line behind the photographer - they wlll leave at three or four minute intervals. Blue trams always terminate here, but the yellow tram on the right has come from the city lines and switched from trolley pole to pantograph - it will then follow the blue trams to a point part-way along the interurban route, to provide a 'through' service at no additional fare. Tram set 113+114+115 is the only one in a new, revised colour scheme.

Ganz / Düwag #1207

21 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Nariman. #1207+#1208. The newest trams on the Alexandria city lines are thirty of these attractive Hungarian Ganz cars, with bogies by Düwag, which run in back-to-back coupled pairs. These trams are normally seen only on lines in the southern suburbs and not in the city centre.

Duewag GT6 #888

21 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Ras el Tin. A typical narrow street in one of the market areas of Alexandria. The city trams make very slow progress here against a tide of people, cars minibuses and horse-drawn vehicles. These Düwags have run for almost fifty years and some look a bit 'tired', but they still work OK. Note the trolley pole and trolley wheel - very unusual for a Düwag.

Jinling JLY6101SA #2

21 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - Ras el Tin. A picture for our new bus fans - some TWB debuts, I'm sure, but language translation becomes difficult. This smart double decker comes from the Jinling factory in China and is one of a small fleet operating a 'sea front' service in Alexandria. Is this the first one we have seen? Apart from some tourist Neoplan coaches, we saw no other double-deck buses anywhere.

Kinki Sharyo DD #224

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (Egypt) - Mustafa Kamel. Blue Alexandria trams operate on the Ramleh interurban lines, which connect with the orange cars of the city system but which are all on private track. A very intensive service of permanently-coupled, three car tram sets leaves the city every few minutes. The big attraction is, of course, these double-deck trams, once very common in the UK but now found only in Blackpool and Hong Kong. Lovely!

Duewag GT6 #869

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - El Central (railway station). Alexandria has both city and interurban trams - this is one of 89 ex-Copenhagen Düwags that have been here since the 1970s. Although the interurban lines run on private tracks, many market areas like this cause much delay to the city trams. It is even possible to see places where the market is moved back, away from the tram tracks, until a tram has passed by!
