Works shunter #Lucien-1

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – zajezdnia/depot Gentbrugge. This odd little battery-powered works car is one of two constructed here from the remains of ex-Bochum Deuwag car #11 of 1961. They call them Lucien-1 and Lucien-2 and they are used to move bogies around in the workshops. Behind is the body of Vicinal SO Type car 9014 of 1956, a Coast line tram which is being made ready for their big 2010 centenary.

PCC #01

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – Zuid. When I first came to Gent ten years ago, I was surprised to see that their PCC cars had no partition between the passengers and driver (who issues tickets and takes cash). In 2009, I’m really amazed that the unrefurbished cars are still like this – Gent must be a very low-crime city.

PCC #01

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) - Burgstraat. The first PCC delivered to Gent in 1971 (#6201) has been nicely restored to the original blue and cream livery of the former Gent tramway company (MIVG) and renumbered back to #01. A very pretty tram.

SachsenTram MGT6-2A #6317

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – Flanders Expo. The Gent tramway network is still growing – this is the latest extension to an exhibition site and park-and-ride facility. New trams are also arriving, which will eventually mean the withdrawal of the lovely PCCs. The new trams are the standard de Lijn Hermelijn Bombardier cars – efficient, but not very exciting.

PCC #6205

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – Zwijnaardebrug. One of the many PCCs which has been modernised with separate driving cabs and air conditioning – this is the reason for the ugly scoops on the roof, which rather spoils the appearance.

PCC #6231

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – zajezdnia/depot Gentbrugge. A classic metre-gauge Belgian PCC. The 55 Gent series PCCs are all double-ended and were delivered in two batches between 1971 and 1974. Many have been refurbished, but these original cars still carry their old Gent number (#31) alongside the de Lijn 62xx number. At 35 years old, they are still as good as new!

DAB 11-0920S #3983

5 june 2009 - Liege (BE) – museum Natalis. One for the TWB detectives, I think. This Scania DAB ultra-low-floor bus stands in a corner of the Liege transport museum. It’s in TEC colours, but looks as if it is brand new and has never been registered or operated. It originated from the Danish Silkeborg plant, which (I thought) stopped making buses in 2003 when the company went bankrupt. An impressive bus, though – the floor is only 17cm from the ground, and lowers another 6cm at stops. So what’s the story, I wonder? If it was built several years ago, why has TEC never used it, and why is it in the museum?

FIAT 420HA-ST2 Van Hool #8366

7 june 2009 - Schepdaal (BE). This Fiat bus from the Bruxelles museum collection still operates tourist services in the city. It’s seen here at the Schepdaal SNCV/NMBS Vicinal tramway museum, which was open to the public for some years, but is now a store – I’ll show some pictures of the trams inside another day. Schepdaal was once a tram depot on the line from Bruxelles to Ninove.

Mercedes-Benz O317 / Van Hool #229

5 june 2009 - Liege (BE) – museum Natalis. I’m not sure, but I think this Mercedes is an 0302 model. It dates from 1963 and was in Liege city service until 1976, when it was moved to the transport museum. Are there any Mercedes experts out there who can identify it?

Mercedes O405GN #707

9 june 2009 - Adinkerke (BE). Another new operator to TWB, and a new city, too – DK’Bus Marine is the city operator for Dunkerque in Northern France, running just over 100 buses. This is an international bus service to the nearby railway station at De Panne in Belgium, just a few stops over the border (which doesn’t really exist any more). Here it connects with the tram to Knokke, so just one simple change of vehicle will take you from France to Netherlands.

Neoplan N122/3 #SU-HK 6005

6 june 2009 - Erezee (BE). Neoplan experts – please tell me what model this is, as there are so many and I don’t have a clue! A debut TWB operator, from Troisdorf in Germany.

Braine-le-Comte bogie tram #9985

9 june 2009 - De Panne (BE) – Sint Idesbald. Look closely – this is a hotel! Someone decided to build this place as a copy of the famous ocean liner ‘Normandy’. What a crazy thing! The tram is much more serious, of course, a very nice 1930s motor car and 1950s trailer, both of which ran on this line for many years and which are now part of the de Lijn historic fleet. Several more old trams are now being renovated, ready for the 2010 centenary.

SachsenTram MGT6-1 #7266

9 june 2009 - De Haan/Coq-sur-Mer (BE) – The coast line is always very short of trams in the busy summer period, when thousands of holidaymakers arrive, so extra trams are transferred from Antwerpen and Gent each year to assist. This new tram has just arrived and is being used for driver training, ready to join the active fleet in a few days’ time. The French version of De Haan (Coq-sur-Mer) translates in English to Chicken on Sea……

BN LRV #6019

9 june 2009 - De Panne (BE) – Adinkerke. The coast line was recently extended to a new interchange with bus and rail services, very close to the French border. The bus waiting in this picture is actually a French bus, working an international service of 2km! Trains to Bruxelles also come here, making it a perfect transport solution. Tram 6019 will shortly begin the 70km run to Knokke.

Braine-le-Comte bogie tram #9985

9 june 2009 - Oostende/Ostend (BE) – Raversijde. I was pleased to get this shot of a historic tram and trailer at one of the few places where the tramway actually runs alongside the North Sea - most of the line is on reserved track, but slightly inland. The motor car is a ‘Standard’ SNCV/NMBS type of the 1930s.

BN LRV #6044

9 june 2009 - Knokke (BE) – stelplaats/zajezdnia. BN car 6044 waits at the northern terminus of Knokke for the next two-hour trip to the French border. These trams were identical to the BN cars running in Charleroi, but have now been changed out of all recognition, with a new low-floor-centre section (often slightly different from one tram to another). Next year is the line’s centenary, and many celebrations are planned, so all tram fans should go there!

BN LRV #6040

11 june 2009 - Oostende/Ostend (BE) – station/dworzec. At almost 70km long, the Kust Tram, or coast line, of de Lijn is the longest tram line in the world. Trams are heavily modified BN cars of the early 1980s and run very fast, with long distances between stops. This is a classic interurban tramway, linking a number of towns along the coast, from the French border almost to Netherlands.

FN T36 / ACEC #45

11 june 2009 - Anvers/Antwerpen (BE) – zajezdnia/stelplaats Punt aan de Lijn. In the Antwerp workshops is this Type T36 trolleybus of 1938. In fact, no actual Antwerp trolleys have survived and this was originally #453 from the Liege system. The last trolleybuses ran in Antwerp in 1964 (and this wasn’t one of them).

Brossel / Paul D`Heure / ACEC #402

5 june 2009 - Liege (BE) – museum Natalis. Two pictures inside the double-ended trolleybus, showing the steering wheels and controls at BOTH ends! This must have been very interesting to drive………

Brossel / Paul D`Heure / ACEC #402

5 june 2009 - Liege (BE) – museum Natalis. For those who missed it when I showed it before – the craziest trolleybus in the world! This amazing DOUBLE-ENDED, three-axle bus from the suburban RELSE company has to be seen to be believed. Several of these buses were operated along a line where there was no room to build a turning place, so they went backwards and forwards like a tram. They carried FOUR trolleypoles, of course!

FN T54 / ACEC #544

5 june 2009 - Liege (BE) – museum Natalis. A later Type 54 trolleybus from 1954, by which time the city operator had changed its name to STIL and adopted a different colour scheme. A very nice bus.

TN T32 / CEB #432

5 june 2009 - Liege (BE) – museum Natalis. Today, here are some Liege trolleybuses. The city once had two trolleybus operators and three different tramway systems – all gone, now, of course. This is a typical Type T32 trolleybus of 1932 that operated in Liege until 1971. Note the wartime headlamp masks.

Type 18 steam tram locomotive #1075

6 june 2009 - Erezee (BE) – depot/zajezdnia TTA, Blier. An original SNCV steam tram locomotive and open ‘baladeuse’ trailer. This is a Type 18 locomotive – one of several standard types introduced by the SNCV.

Autorail - Baume et Marpent #AR 133

6 june 2009 - Erezee (BE) – Amonines. The TTA train crossing a minor road on the way to Erezee. Once a passenger line, this track survived for the transport of timber from the nearby Ardennes forests and was saved by enthusiasts. One day, they hope to extend the current operation – the tracks are still in place, but unsafe for regular use.

6 june 2009 - Erezee (BE) - Amonines. I showed a few pictures of the TTA museum line before – this is an original Vicinal tramway running 8km through very nice scenery in the Ardennes. All the vehicles are authentic SNCV diesel trams and trailers that once ran on similar lines throughout Belgium – there is also an SNCV steam tram locomotive for special occasions.

ACEC VAU #001

5 june 2009 - Liege (BE) – museum Natalis. This passenger information display inside Car 1 gives a clue to where the Liege TAU would have run – it would have been lit from behind when in use, so it’s rather difficult to photograph. It gives some idea of the original plan, though. They say that at least one tunnel is still there, but closed off. Now Liege is just a city of buses, having scrapped all its trams, too.

ACEC VAU #002

5 june 2009 - Liege (BE) – museum Natalis. Inside VAU car 2 – like travelling to work in a cupboard! I think the outside dimensions are a little less than a Lille VAL car, which makes them very small indeed. Seven dwarves would fit OK, but Snow White would need to take the bus.

ACEC VAU #002

5 june 2009 - Liege (BE) – museum Natalis. The very odd wheel arrangement of the TAU cars. There were four independent driving wheels per car, each with a small guide wheel, designed to turn corners of only 10m radius. That would have been worth seeing! No VAL-style rubber tyres here, but just steel wheels on steel rails. Current collection was by outside third rail.

ACEC VAU #002

5 june 2009 - Liege (BE) – museum Natalis. The second prototype car. These are reported to have run many km on test at Jumet, but the whole project was kept very quiet, and it is difficult to find out much information today. Why was it suddenly abandoned, I wonder? ACEC is now part of Alstom, of course – perhaps they killed off the project when they took over? Now, Liege again has plans to reintroduce trams, or maybe make another attempt to build a metro.

ACEC VAU #001

5 june 2009 - Liege (BE) – museum Natalis. The ‘secret’ metro that never was…..in 1985, the city of Liege began to construct a metre-gauge light metro, based on VAL principles, called the Transport Automatise Urbain (TAU). Some tunnels were started and a test track was installed behind the TEC depot in Jumet (Charleroi), where these two prototype cars ran for some time- then the project was suddenly (and very quietly) abandoned. The two cars now stand in the Natalis Transport Museum.

12 may 2009 - Gent (BE) – Gentbrugge. The star of the show for the closing parade was the historic Bruxelles trolleybus from the Woluwe museum, which was brought here specially for the weekend. Here, it arrives back at the depot entrance after a test run. Just behind, a line of withdrawn trolleys wait for the scrap man.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) - Gent (BE) – Sint-Michielshelling. Crossing the city centre for almost the last time. A few other Belgian cities had trolleybuses, but Gent has been the last system for many years. At the end, this was one of only three Gent trolleybuses that could be operated.

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – Sint-Michielshelling. The centre of Gent has very nice buildings, but often too many people! I managed to take this photo, though. The trolleybuses have diesel engines for operating away from the wires (very slow and noisy) and would probably be OK for a few more years, but de Lijn has decided to replace them with normal buses, and maybe one day with another tram line – the trolleybus route was once a tram line, which the trolleys replaced.

Van Hool AG280T #11

12 june 2009 - Gent (BE) – Gentbrugge Meersemdries. Dzien dobry! I made a little European trip, so was quiet for a while. Now, I hope to bring you new photos. BN PCC 7000 #7055

26 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Cureghem. A view inside the STIB tramway works shows just how small the place is. PCC car 7055 is one of several now converted for use as works cars – in this case with a hydraulic platform that can swing out from a side door to load heavy equipment.

BN PCC 7000 #7008

27 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Cureghem. The STIB tramway workshops are in a narrow side street. Inside, the place is very cramped and there isn’t much room to work. Even the entrance is tiny and is a very tight squeeze, particularly as all trams have to enter backwards across a very busy street.

PCC 7900 #7918

26 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Porte d’Anderlecht. This tram is just passing one of the old Bruxelles city gates on its way into the pre-metro tunnels at Lemonnier. The single track in the foreground leads to the Cureghem workshops.

Bombardier T2000 #2002

29 march 2009 - Bruxelles (BE) – Rue Royale. A 2000-class tram. These frequently come off the track, so they are now limited to 50km/hour maximum speed. The same type of tram is used by De Lijn, but on metre gauge and flat ground – in Bruxelles, they have been a real problem and will be withdrawn when enough new Bombardier cars arrive. Does anywhere in Poland want some cheap, low-floor trams?
